Wouldn't drop a thermocouple in a consumer unit.

But you’re not interested in measuring temperature in a consumer unit, you’re measuring temperature difference. For which a infrared camera is the best tool.

I’ve got a fluke 61 (I think?) with adjustable emissivity that used to get used a lot for checking for insulation breakdown on thermal oxidisers and dryers and also for checking the core temperatures on paper reels - guarantee every year starting around September we would start to get calls to say our reel splicing machines were not working. We spent days checking cylinders, speed match of drives, changing encoders - all to no avail.

we spoke to the splice tape manufacturer's and they said they won’t work below around 10 deg c, as we measured the temperature of the unwinding reel sure enough below 10 degrees or so they would start to miss splices at high speed. So I’ve spent days of my life waving these things at reels of paper in newspaper and magazine printing plants....

Yes any thermocouple would be more accurate but as with everything they have their place - there’s plenty of things that need measuring where it’s just not possible to use a thermocouple or probe of some type.

Handy for checking bearings, noisey wheel bearings are always noticeabley hotter after a good drive.
