Hi guys,

Just found your website and i'm hoping you can help me out,i'm searching for a decent single phase welder(180 amps or above).
i was wondering if anyone had anything for sale on here as i'm getting fed up of looking on e-bay and then getting outbid on welders available or if i'm honest not wanting to pay over the odds for one!!!.
But saying that there's a rand 210 amp welder on there at the moment what looks quite promising,what i would like to know is are they a good welder and are spares readily available?,i'm only used to murex,esab and kempii welders(3 phase)so any info on any of the above would be greatly appreciated,

The Rand machines are the same as the European Miller machines, not as good as the original American Millers but decent stuff all the same.
Not sure on spares availability, I havn't seen a Rand rep. for years.

How longs a piece of string?! Always a gamble with second hand stuff, just have to use your own judgment on condition it looks etc.
I'd be more inclined to go for a Murex/Esab/Kemppi but they are like rocking horse s*** for a good clean example.

Well if you are after something for nothing you'll have to chance your arm on eBay, good a place as anywhere. What kind of budget are you looking at?

Looks like eBay then; you won't get a really good quality new machine for 300 quid. What type of work do you want it for?

something good enough to be able to do car panel/chassis repairs on the 58 pop i've got,but at the same time be able to fabricate gates/railings etc,have you any suggestions?

Paul,

DIYwelding is a trader. He seems to have jumped in there a bit quick as soon as he sensed a sale. I did not notice any advice coming from him about types so he will sell what he has. My advice to you would be to learn a bit, from members here that post help, and then ask the traders on here for specific sets. I recently spent a lot of time learning and had the patience to wait for eBay to come up with something that I wanted.

Out of the popular hobby machines, clarke, sealey, sip etc, Clarke are reckoned to be the best. They are not semi-pro machines but good enough. The general advice seems to be to stay away from SIP. Some of the guys on here can advise you what capacity you need for your work requirements, or you can read the forum and sus it for yourself. With the money you have you could do well on eBay if you have the patience.

I think that's fair enough!
If I was in the market for a second hand welder, I thin I'd rather buy from a trader who would presumably;
a) Make sure the machines on offer were in good working order.
b) Give some sort of limited guarantee (30 days or so).
c) Be able to offer advice and spares support.

Than an anonymous ebay trader who has;
a) Found it in a house move
b) "Hasn't tested it as they can't find a plug"
c) Unless you go and see it, could sell you a rusty box full of wires and spider's legs.

Obviously, in the frst case you would pay a premium, but it's up to the buyer to decide if that's worth it, no-one's forcing anyone to do anything.
