Inflation of tools and materials

Today I finally exhausted my supply of little jointing brackets...I bought 200 of them for a project in may 2016 and had a lot of spares (I'd kept the order confirmation email so I can verify the price)!

Roll on 8 years I'm looking for the same brackets...these are simple 2mmx97mmx35mm brackets bought from a "well known" chain supplier.

Price in 2016 (10 pack) = £2.69
Price in 2024 (10 pack) = £6.99

....thats an average annual inflation rate of 6% per year over 8 years which seems pretty nuts!

Anyone else got some (verifiable) price changes which are similar (or worse!)

By comparison my Kemppi Ev0 20 mig was £1,018 12 years ago...and now is £1,126 which ain't bad!

Pretty much everything I've been buying has doubled since the pandemic as a minimum.
Some things tripled, some even up to five or ten times the price.
Wages around here are pretty stagnant, really it seems like they have barely doubled in 25 years.

Net result is it makes every little project very expensive now, and some not even worth starting.

Yes more than doubled in 8 years...I was wrong...its actually an average increase of 12.5% per year (accumulated over 8 years)!

Maybe I should have bought a few thousand of them originally!

Net result is it makes every little project very expensive now, and some not even worth starting.

I'm looking at projects differently too...a lot of things aren't worth bothering to get started.

Can't believe I'm contemplating going down the garage and making my own joining brackets!

I was checking prices we pay for 100mm dia ducting elbows today - mainly to compare it with the price of specially fabricated one an ex-colleague decided to design and use . . .

Bought in 2016 the ducting one was £12.
Today we pay £29.

Still better than the special at £190 !

I think we're used to paying more for things here...but lately it seems like things have just gone a bit nuts.

For example Electricity prices in the uk are about $0.44 per kWh...think the USA is about $0.17 per kWh?

I used to pay car insurance 340 euros back in 2020
No registered accidents so it should be less than 300 today, 250 exactly that's what I should pay ....
361 that's what I have to pay.
Gasoline was 1.44 euros/ litres just after lockdown.
Now is around 1.89 , during holidays it can go up to 2.50 euro/ litres ,and that's a shame cause we have one of the biggest oil distillery in the entire Europe over here(half hour of car from home) and most of the fuel around Italy comes from Sardinia .
Prepared food.
I'm lactose intolerant and I'm little bit in disadvantage, I have to buy specific things like biscuits which were always around 1.80 euros and now 2.40 up to 3.60 euros depending upon the brand and type.
Peach croissants were 2.40 for a pack of 6 now they are 3.60 for a pack of 5 .
They downsized the weights too.
And the first example comes in my mind is beans and tuna cans , they used to be 190g and now they are are 160g
Same thing with soft drinks.
A specific brand for cold tea used to be sold in 1.25 litres bottle and now they make 0.75 litres bottle.
Another one was in 0.5 litres bottle and 0.4 litres right now.
All that with a 20% price increase roughly.
It's a shame.
Paycheck increased for me but not because of other factors but me cause I gained experience in those 3 years, started from 950 euros at month and now reached 1250.
Off course I work more and I have more liabilities.
So at the end of the story, it's like it didn't change at all !!!
But the thing which became really expensive over here is silicon caulking cartridges.
I used to buy red engine gasket for 3.50 euros... That's for a cartridge to put in the caulking gun , so the biggest tube I could get .
Nowadays it's around 18 euros....
That's a good 6 times more expensive.
I still remember the day when I've discovered that.
Obviously didn't have enough money in the pocket so imagine my face when the cashier told me how much it was.
Pulled out the MasterCard to not appear a completely idiot!!!

Brexit had it's role for sure, and Europe too has to pay for that.
Every time I purchase something from the UK shipped to Italy I pay more on taxes than on the item itself.

Absolutely ridiculously so, ammunition generally is becoming very, very expensive and I am starting to view shooting as a "rich man's sport". It isn't and shouldn't be but reality tells me it is. As many on here have pointed out, it is everything, in the last four or five years prices have just climbed relentlessly, but I have seen some falls just recently which may, or may not be a good thing.

Absolutely ridiculously so, ammunition generally is becoming very, very expensive and I am starting to view shooting as a "rich man's sport". It isn't and shouldn't be but reality tells me it is. Yes I agree,in the last 4 or 5 years everything became more expensive.
And yes some price tags are starting go down ,but others are becoming more expensive day by day

Tell me about it...I've been looking for a floor to put in my budget shed repair.

Had the great idea of just buying some old pine floor boards off eBay...coated and raised of the ground they'd last a while.

Nobody sells old floorboards anymore ..they do however sell "reclaimed" floors for £25-£40 per SQM!

The worst thing for me is food shopping. We get absolutely fleeced in the UK. What used to be a monthly shop of 100 quid is now more than double. The weekly bits used to be 20 quid, this morning is was 71. The 6 monthly Costco freezer fill used to be under 300 quid, now it’s 500.
Fillet steak used to be a weekly thing for us cos we all love it, now it’s monthly. 3 really nice bits of fillet from the local butcher was 12 quid until 2020, then suddenly it doubled overnight.
Bought a 5 litre tin of anti mould paint for the north end of the house where it’s single brick. We do this every 5 years. The last tin was 18 quid, same tin a few weeks back was 52 quid.
The world has gone mad I tell ya.
