In line back draught arrester

Ive just had an epiphany, well actually Ive just been sat having an ertha kitt with the draught around my ankles wondering where the draught was coming from.

Ive an inline 4 inch fan from the shower piped out to the soffit, and didnt even think about a draught arrester.

Any decent recommendations, and can they be placed in any orientation or is it best horizontally just before the fan ?

We've fitted flaps to the outsides of the fan outlets. Something like this:

They work well. The two-flap versions tend to make quite a racket when they open and slam shut during strong winds. The three flap versions less so. Super viscous grease on the flap pivots can calm things down, if the flaps flapping is a problem, and makes them behave as if they're hydraulically controlled. We're talking something like Newgate Simms PG-44A, not your average lithium grease.

We have a vent fan with shutters in the en-suite, a cowl is fitted outside, but no matter which way the wind blows the fecking shutters keep a clatterin….

all i can say is think yourself lucky yours is a simple job, as ive been chasing draughts and finding holes for weeks now

some i knew was there but couldnt do a thing with them as parent wouldnt let me even though complained of being cold

my issue was the house was way too warm so the push was outwards

heres my list so far

draughts under both external doors
draught under the bath
chimney draught it sucks more than blows
found a loverly draught under the concrete floor under the bath its literally blowing under the whole concrete floor
found a hole in the ceiling

im left annoyed at my parents as one should have known better the other, why didnt you sort the jobs for your own comfort id had many a row over doing what was right and needed at the time

external door seal cant use double glazed door with elderly it has to be a threshold seal or a flap on the external door to seal brush bar fitted internally so still causes a slight draught
draught under the bath holes through wall not filled
box around gas fire and insulate to seal the chimney draught pull
draught under floor is a big job its clean out everything and relevel and relay the concrete floor ( not worth it as in probate at moment )
fill holes in ceiling but allow them to be found easily

last hole is mine as i had to create a manhole to insulate the roof void at moment its sealed within reason and has 9" insulation and still has a small draught until i get the last of the ceiling insulated
im literally sliding on boards on my belly to install the insulation



im geting no help from my brother hes sat there wanting his share

if its the the inline fan fitted in the duct and not on the wall the back draught shutter is fitted after just the fan in the duct

thats why i said fit the inline shutter there less susceptible to opertating like a door knocker tapping just taped up ours on the cooker hoof for now doing our heads in with the wind

Job done. I took the precaution of sticking the spring ends on with a couple of dots of glue as I had read they can become dislodged otherwise. Forgot to take a picture

Can’t believe how much difference there is in the comfort of the bathroom from fitting a £9 part. Its actually warm in there even if the wind is howling outside
