I think the op said it was for a roof rack, so VW might have bought-in something like that, maybe from a foreign supplier. The other explanation is to do with the history of VW - they were rescued after the war by the British Army, who got the VW factory up and running and started producing cars again. But for a bloke called Ivan Hirst from Oldham, the factory would have been dismantled and the machinery scrapped.What were the gerrys doing with imperial stuff in the 60's
