If you were making a lean-to carport...

...what materials would you use? It is to hang from the side of a large brick/render garage and be sited over spongy soil that get very wet under trees. Digging out footings for a wall would be awful due to the clay soil filled with flat rocks but maybe just 2 corners would be possible.

Polycarbonate roof panels or plastic-coated steel? Insulated? Wood or steel legs? Sooooo many options.

I used scaffolding poles (galv'd) and KeeKlamp fitting for the frame and then added timber crossbeams that industrial grade fibreglass translucent roofing sheets attached.

Same as Paul regarding the roof, but I'd personally go with wood throughout, (I just think wood is nicer generally, especially aesthetically in a setting like that), and stand the uprights on slabs of stone or concrete to spread the weight and also to keep them from direct contact with the soil. If you used planed rather than rough sawn timber, it will also absorb far less moisture.

I would probably use 50mm x 50mm box main frame with 50mm angle for the sheets to fix to, galvanised when finished, clad with whatever you fancy..there is some good plastic/fibreglass sheets available now in a choice of colours.

It looks fairly well sheltered so no need for overkill with material size and weight.

Personally I'd put a compacted base in first of 20mm stone or type A to get rid of the mud even if its just a couple of inches on top. Then a wooden frame resting on paving slabs and a plastic roof.

Built a quicky like yours. Wooden poles and and rafters with ceramic interlocking tiles. 5mt X 3mt. The poles were seated in galvanized sockets that had long spikes driven into the ground. All timber was pressure treated.
Timber and sockets from local 'B&Q' Tiles left over from barn. Less than a day to set up.
