Identifying stainless

When i put the MG back together i want to use only stainless. I have lots of imperial fixings steel and SS and i know some stainless is magnetic. How can i tell them apart?

For most bolts the magnet test will be good enough, hex heads and cap screws are usually marked with the grade, look for the numbers A2 or A4, they will be stainless

from memory, A2 is 304L and A4 is 316L

Thanks both Bearing in mind some of the fittings in my 'special imperial tin' may be up to 40yrs old, do the markings still apply? What about self tappers and jubilees etc?

Decorative trim & non stressed components I hope. Stainless bolts are no good for suspension parts or similar safety critical components,

No, suspension and chassis fittings will be H/T. This is all engine and bay covers and trims but thanks for pointing it out.

You can get a small anodising kit and anodise the suspension fastenings to make them look nice.

Ive heard the diy kits are available. Bit sceptical of such things but never seen the results. Anyone used one?

If it's only for trim etc, i wouldn't worry about it, just use what fits. The Man is right on, nothing structural...

Do you mean chrome plate kits ? I would be careful there too as you can get hydrogen embrittlement chroming certain grades and types of steel. Some of the stronger stainless steels are magnetic, i bought some pinch bolts for my bsa and they were magnetic.

What ever it takes to keep the rust at bay really. Zinc plated steel can tend to tarnish and rust.

Stainless gauls on threads badly, not worth the effort Imo if you don't want corrosion treat the bolts after tightening Imo.

a2 is not corrosion resistant against salt,for that you need a4,as kent says,if the nuts out of sight use bzp & heavy grease smear.
