Identify the mystery vice

when you get that one figure out try this one

I already spotted it in the smith & arrow thread scarecrow. I was trying to work it out when I saw it.

Boy... that's a beaut! Old too. Seen some action ehh?

Unfortunately the tail stock is broken. As you can see I've effected a suitable repair with a leaf!

I have no idea how old it is my father bought it at a closing down of an old Forge over 40 years ago and it wasn't exactly new then
I also have a record vice but it has started jumping the treads probably something wrong with the quick release I must take apart some day and have a look
that's nice sturdy vice you have their knoba we will have to get our act together and spray them up and make them look real pretty before we started hammering the daylight out of them again

Wooo , I've got one of those as well. Mine's got less paint but seems intact - haven't actually used it yet, it was thrown in wih a £20 bench I bought and I haven't got round to fixing it in place

Certain parts look exactly like my 5 1/2" QR Woden from around 1960 ish.
Main castings different though, jaw mounting very similar.

I guess you know by now your old vice is a Fortis

Your vice looks like a mixture of the mystery Zardoz vice and mine. I think you have knocked the nail on the head there. Any idea of the date or history of yours?

I was guessing with the date of mine, but if it is Fortis chances are mine might be an model made before of after yours.

i got one o them and its in fair nick. got it given its had the 14 lb hammer treatment and still going strong

Could you post a photo Brightspark - the two Fortis vices and the possible all look a little different. Yours might be the connection between them.

Mine is exactly the same shape as Zardoz`s except it hasn't got the 12 cast on it, same shape as yours also Malc,but for the cast lettering on yours.
