Identification of property

With the increase in opportunist robberies these days I was wondering if.

Any body with good effective ideas with regard to identification of your welders or other property should they be stolen. Or good deterrents to make tools undesirable.
Such as etching, painting etc

My tools are locked in a shed/barn btw

I just want to make it as hard as possible for someone to resell my hard earned tools should they be liberated

Our stuff is stamped with our company name, with stickers on too. Name is welded on some big kit. Obviously all defeatable. Scaffold towers and stuff we spray bright orange. Smaller stuff engraved with names etc.
I know a groundworks outfit that painted everything pink. Lads hate it, get all sorts of nicknames...but never loose any tackle.

All my dads tools are painted pink, i hate working for him during my summer holidays because even the digger is pink Last year my ex girlfriend (but was my girlfriend then) walked passed the sight, she never let me live that one down.

smart water hasnt stopped the scrotes pinching the lead of the church roof along with swiping the lightning conductor cabe and the pyro feeding the outside lights i paint quite a lot of stuff with orange paint and drill holes in the cases with my initials it dont stop them but its well noticable along with your post code round our way bradford and northern drill the cases oncentral heating boilers they get that many nicked in empty houses and even lived in ones some have electronic devices fitted internal if the powers been off for more than 24 hours the boiler wont work so its usless without the factory code

Power tools and the like....as well as engraving it in obvious places on the casing, we engrave them inside. Scrotes unlikely to take the case apart so if it ever gets recovered and the engraving is ground off the outside, we can still prove it is ours.

Not a fan of painting, most things I stamp my initials on, engraved on others.
Didn't help much when most of my hand tools got robbed mind.

Powertools, engraved in a couple of places, normally somewhere nice and visible, and a secondary markings inside where batteries go, behind blades etc.

With regard to welding on details, yeah, it can be ground off, but etch tests will show it up should someone need to know.

Simon as I understand the portamig is quite heavy!! So get yer mate to give you a hand and turn it on its side and paint your post code on underside. Having watched many of the police camera type progs that are on tv It seams that even if the scrotes get a tug from the police, unless the police can prove that the equipment IS stolen then they have to return it to them. If (god forbid) you should have to report yours missing in action you can tell the police the post code is on underside. you could also connect it to a VERY heavy chain (ex ship!!) and an rsj. Well I understand that dispite the name they are not very PORTable anyway : )

Simon you could also get one of thoses locking wheels that they have on the shopping trolles. With weight of welder would they lift it and carry??

Marking Property is a bit like a Padlock on a door, it only puts 'honest' people off.

If some one is going with the intent to steal, they are not going to be put off by markings, they will just get less for it, to a smaller market.

Agreed, nothings going to prevent theft 100% unless you create something like a bank vault with a 24h armed guard, but why make it easy for them ? Some deterrent is going to deal with all but the determined career thief, beyond that some risk has to be accepted. Insurance concerns me, may seem a strange comment but when contents and valuables insurance is taken out that company then has all the details on the items, location and theft protection ! All it needs is someone on the inside selling info to tea leaves and they're guaranteed a result !!
Like that scam some years ago where a certain holiday company was linked to serial household burglaries. It was discovered that a member of staff was selling details of people going on holiday for a few weeks or more, the reason is obvious !

What about a Datatag system?, I've had them on my bikes for a number of years, visible unique serial number, concealed RFID tags and invisible (to naked eye) alphadot marking. As most components are "tagged" in some way even breaking the bike doesn't work.

it doesnt work otherwise my pride and joy 2003 CBR600RR3 would have been returned even in bits

On the O.P you mentioned you have a shed, well make an internal security door to make it harder for them! If there gonna steal make them work for it

My bike alarm saved my garage!, I had parked it close to the door the scrotes forced open and they must have bumped it trying to get past, the noise frightened them off.

Rotten garage doors were replaced quickly

9 out of 10 people are lax on security but once burgled any amount is spent on beefing things up . just do it before they strike

Used to work for a high street shop it was narrow but went back a long way with a passage down one side accessed from a door near the front of the shop, it was very narrow about 25 yards long, with a metal door to the back yard, the yard had a 7ft brick wall with no access to a public car park the other side.
The company was Tight never threw anything remotely useful away.
We also had a safe about 6Ft 6ins high a bit like a fridge freezer, it was redundant "Remember TIGHT Co." the manager thought it would make a good cupboard for odd things & the makings for the tea swindle.
So we came in one day to find it gone!! it was carried down the passage, they broke open the steel door to yard, lifted over wall & into a Van we presume, they then drove to a secluded spot on the near buy hills & proceeded to remove the back of the safe.
The effort must have been monumental took 4 of us to put it in the back of the shop in plain view of the front window, still we hoped a £1 book of stamps & half a pint of milk made it all worth while

lol my dad had his workshop broken into years ago when he was a porter on the guiness trust. They used a small safe to keep the paint brushes in as he had lost the key. Some one broke in and nicked it. A few days later it was found by police with the back cut off, if only they had used the handle...

I think that's why a plant stuff is always green any sale it shows up in its very easy to tell where it's come from!
