Ideas... Which spray gun

Looking to buy a spray gun for car work....

I guess people have a favourite... but where do I start?

How much to spend to get something reasonable... and which make and model?

I have used a couple of fast mover guns (gravity HPLP) and quite liked them. They arent bad value imho

ditto i have a FM one here for less than £20 good results for me with it I also have a lidl parkside one too same thing works just as well

Well I managed to pick up a large compressor on ebay for not a lot...

so it has a nice sized receiver with a 4hp motor to fill it.

I wont be using it every day by any means and likely not doing a complete car... single panels..

I have used a Devilbiss advanced HD and whilst its a nice gun (i know its an industrial gun) its certainly not worth 3x the fast mover. In fact there is not much difference.

I have a friend that does "smart" repairs for a living at the local Ford dealers, he recommends a devilbiss mini..

looking at those Fast mover ones they do look like good value....

one for base coat and lacquer..


the supplier asks specify who you wish the gun to be set up??

FLG5s use a lot of air, they are not hvlp, I have two but would no buy again, have a look at the GPi.

I used to spray boiler and pane!s in a factory using Devilbiss and Binks equipment and I use a fast mover gun and Sealey S701G and don't have any problem getting a decent finish at home. Infinity is a big claim there and a novice painter is going to notice very little difference.

Another Question.

Many paints are very harmful, as I don't have a booth etc. Which is the safest paint to use? I guess drying times will be increased?

I understand water based paints are not as nice as they sound, they contain nasties too.

I am still in the dark as to the specifics for the spray gun, but guess we need to know the type of paint first.

I started spraying a year ago and all the kit cost about £1000 to be able to be able to do all the prep work and spray 2k safely. You need to think about much more than your first gun.

To be cost effective you need to be doing a fair number of jobs on your cars.

PS much of my kit as also bought second hand so the above is probably close to the lowest you will need to spend.

I've just got a hvlp gravity gun for 16 quid to paint the Landy using celly works spot on for what it cost I don't know if l would do much better with a 200 quid gun
