I'd worry more about the chrome than the paint, is it starting to bubble?

For some reason mercedes of this era does that on boot trims. I have a 1992 500e and fitted a new genuine boot strip to cure this issue. Within a year the chrome was going the same way. Next time I'll send it off for replating maybe that will last longer.

Here's what I used today.

Festool shaving block, some 3000 grit and polishing compound.

After shaving I did a bit of light sanding with the 3000 grit pad by hand. The 3000 grit haze can easily be polished out by hand without having to break out the rotary polisher.

Is the Festool shaving block essentially just a blade in a carrier at 90 degrees to the surface? I can't find it online and I've got a similar gouge to repair...

It's been like that for the last 13 years, doesn't seem to be getting any worse as the car is seldom out in bad weather. Replacements are available but very expensive.

No, it's a solid block with a very large radius front edge that's sharp.

I had a look back to see what it cost in 2015, I paid £44 Inc p&p. Expensive for a one off job, however I have painted two cars outdoors, so a ood denibber was essential.
