Absolute joy to watch. What was it though?

It's a show piece demonstrating the capabilities of the machine. The number of man hours and how many machines you would have needed 50 years ago to produce that one piece is quite mind boggling.

Looks to me like a differential centre of some description, very clever though.
Its the rate of cut that gets me, especially on steel.
and its a fair tooling selection in that machine too

This is the one that always gets me though:

Compound machining....... where do you start with writing toolpaths for that ?!?!?

The helical cut gears are leading you to think it's a diff centre, have you looked at the worm & wheel teeth cut around 2:30 in the first chuck?

I suppose if it is a test / demo piece it does not have to be anything other than show the machine's full set of movements and a range of tools it can be equipped with.
I did spend quite a lot of time drooling over the Quaife stand at Brands last weekend, perhaps it influenced me more than I thought.

Two more questions, I was surprised to see the original billet was centred so badly, at one point the machine stops rotating and half of the billet is rusty, half has been worked, is that normal?

Also why is the transfer from one chuck to the other made on the fly, is there some advantage in that?

You could write pages on why it was so good But suffice to say there are some really clever engineers out there, developing machines and writing software that I am blown away with every time I see it

Speed sensor ring of some description ?
