I have a meddings pacera mf5 mk1. The motor is 240 volt but have noticed it has sleeve bearings as opposed to roller or ball bearings. And after dismantling found that one of the shim washers that butt up against the sleeve was in bits. I am in two minds as to fixing or binning it. If I bin it is there a particular 240v motor more suited to this application that anyone can reccommend around 1hp. I have no knowledge of motors so don't want to go down 3 phase route.

All the Meddings drill motors I have come accross before had imperial shafts (5/8").
Imperial shaft motors are harder to come by nowadays unless you buy used.
I know you say you don't want a three phase motor, but they are so much better (easily reversed, easy speed control etc). With some of the cheap Chinese VFDs it is literally plug and play too with a three phase motor. You don't HAVE to change any parameters.

Could you post a photo of the motor and shim washer?
If it's like the motor on my meddings either replace the washer with something similar or leave it out. Unless the drill is seeing industrial use it will last for years without the washer.

I’m fairly sure the motor on one of my old ones mine is missing a shim (or 2) as there’s a fair bit of vertical movement when pressed- but it weighs a lot, and doesn’t get moved from the vertical plane, so seems to cope without.
Shaft size is 11/16

Sleeve bearings will last for years. Soak the felt wipers in light oil before you assemble the motor to keep the bearings lubricated.
You could use a good washer on the bottom end of the motor. When it's on the drill the top washer isn't doing anything.

I don't have knowledge either really. (I have a massive case of Impostor syndrome most days anyway!) However, everything in my workshop is three phase. Can't beat it really, as mentioned above, simple to control speed, start, stop and everything in between you can even put a brake on it (don't ask me how, I haven't figured this out yet) so I would absolutely consider three phase and as has been said, mostly just plug and play nowadays.

a VFD will cost as much as a new motor......often u just need to make a new reducing bush to get the pulley to fit...
but of course u need a lathe now.....

I don't find myself disagreeing often with people on this forum but I would dispute that Frank, A VFD for this purpose is about thirty quid so not really into new motor territory there. As Trump's tariffs and boycotts start to bite the cost of some items, diesel heaters spring to mind, has plummeted to an all time low. It is absolutely a buyers market. Not so good when it comes to selling stuff yourself though as the actual value of your kit has sunk too.
You can't have it all ways up I suppose.
