i know ive been posting alot but here is an unusal question

ok guys here it is my dad found me two copper mallets I always wanted on but could never justify the price the faces as u can imagine are well worn is there any way i can build them back up is copper poisonous xyz I have either flux and Rothenberg copper brazing rods and a plumbers blow lamp or tig and I have or can get loads of copper wire or is it not possible

Is it a Thor mallet, if so you can buy the inserts,

You can buy new copper faces. Are they Thor hammers?

Would it not be better to cast a new one combining the original with the copper wire

Mine have a copper in one side and a hide in the other, 2 mallets in one

they were free so not complaining altho do they take standard handles from hammers? One does need replacing

If copper both sides then use to destruction and then buy another.

Have good look at Fig 6

Lead was the worse.

Simply put.

Remove all the old metal, add to your growing scrap pile.

Clean the inside, very well.

Re clean again.

With bee's wax lub the insides.

Clean/polish the new copper and wipe with a bit of bee's wax, a thin coating

Place copper in the freezer, 24 hours.

Heat the head up, the wax will melt, but carefully wipe it round.

Line up both new faces in a press or a vice and press in.

Quickly, but evenly.


Then give the new faces a few dam good blows on a firm surface.

Or as most do keep using them until the shaft gives out.


Why did I do it.

I had a few pints of a beer called Skull splitter.
