its the only way I can get the money. there is about a grand on the price over 5 years, which for my credit rating is quite good
I'd say only consider 5 years finance on a BRAND NEW car - not secondhand. Limit yourself to 3 or if at all possible just 2 years on a secondhand car. If that won't give you a budget to buy the car you want then "cut your cloth accordingly" and look at cheaper models or accept higher monthly payments.
Last year friends bought a low mileage 06 Kia Sedona from a very well known car main dealer. They had a long HP deal to get payments down to an affordable level. It had faults from day one and even failed it's MOT a few months ago needing quite a lot of work to gain a pass. A short while ago the balancer shaft decided it no longer wanted to stay in situ so made a break for freedom and totally wrecked the engine. It had already been back to the selling dealer to have the noise rectified (friends have no idea what was done). It's now in the hands of an independent dealer who says it's "beyond economic repair" as new or good secondhand engine only option as original block is damaged. Friends thought with being on HP they were covered and could simply return the car to the company as they had already paid 11 months of repayments and Citizens Advise said they would only have to make another payment to bring it up to 12 months before the agreement could be cancelled. They know doing such will destroy their credit rating but making payments for the next few years on a car that is scrap is even worse. Quote for cheapest repair cost (good secondhand engine / labour) is almost as much as the vehicle is now worth so they have bought an 06 Mondeo for cash to stay mobile. They are delighted with the Mondeo !
BTW I have only ever owned on Renault (21 Savanna) and never again will I even consider another of their products. On the other hand I've had numerous VW, some quite ancient, without serious problems.
Can you gaurantee that the vehicle you choose will last 5 years without costing you a lot in parts? Better to save up for a bit and buy another vehicle outright IMHO.
Nahh !!! it's a Renault
What about bangernomics? £500 and you can get something quite nice normally...
I spent a bit more £790 for my Focus, it's had only £250ish actually spent on it and that was for new rubber all round and some alloys. I could have kept slapping part worns on though but wanted some alloys and got a good deal... Needs brakes sorting next month which is probably going to be £100 or so's worth of parts (new pads front, new shoes rear, and new handbrake cable). But been solid, and I've probably saved nearly half what it cost me vs running the Discovery to work.
I know it's no consolation to you but a friend of mine has had his 56 plate Renault Migraine for 4 years and not had a single problem with it, I suppose it's just luck of the draw and all that. Our car is a Citroen Berlingo and it's only had a battery and a front spring in 3 years apart from basic maintenance so not doing bad. Any second hand car is a gamble if you don't have the service history and some unscrupulous traders/sellers will falsify that anyway. I wlways tend to fix what I've got till I get fed up of it which is the point you have now arrived at but don't rush into anything and have a good look round before you commit to another car.
