When I purchased my industrial unit a working 25 year old 3ph Hypertherm 800 was left behind by the previous owner.
I have had it sat around for a year now doing nothing and even listed it for sale here for £150 but the mods wouldn’t allow it as I had more than three items listed, so it sat here unloved. During a chance discussion with a CNC plasma cutter repair man I mentioned that I had an old 800 doing nothing; he told me they were actually really good machines and he didn’t think he had ever had to repair one, unlike newer Hypertherm models, and was well worth keeping.
With tha in mind I decided to do a mini refurb on it and bring it up to modern standards
As it was - dirty, unloved with old torch and integral earth lead.
First job was to whip the covers off and get rid of the inbuilt earth lead. The new Hypertherms use a 16mm Dinse socket so I used the same - it was an absolutely perfect fit in the machine
Gave the insides a good blow out and clean, then scrubbed the outer cover - this has a textured Matt finish and was a nightmare to clean, but pretty pleased with how it came out.
I ordered the Hypertherm upgrade kit for the 800 which upgrades it to the current Duramax torch and consumables (at a price!). I’m really impressed that Hypertherm still provide an upgrade path for a machine which was last made in 1998. Torch was a straight fit, along with new earth lead and decent bronze earthing clamp
Hypertherm even provide a new sticker for the top which overlays the original section detailing the new consumables required
Rewired it with new 2.5mm flex and new 3ph plug, all done and ready for work, sat alongside its 25 year newer smaller brother!
