if you're talking electonics then basically it's a high speed switching device (usually a transistor) that switches a DC current on and off as it enters a transformer. This allows the transformer to 'transform' as they usually only work on AC.
The output is generally much higher than the input.
If it's a single transistor then it's usually easy to change but there tends to be serveral of them. And if it's in a switched mode power supply then when one component fails it'll take maybe ten others with it.
If a replacement kit is available then it'll generally cost £10 - £15 and include everything needed.
That's the simple answer but I'm sure some more electronics bods will be along to clarify/add.
It's a subject that can get very technical very quickly.
I very much doubt there is any kind of 'kit' available, more likely the full power module/circuit & you won't get anything through Hypertherm for 10-15 quid... a couple of replacement torch electrodes maybe!

well, as you can guess I'm not familiar with that company.
I based the price on paying around £6 for a similar kit to repair switched mode power supplies in satellite receivers. The Pace and Amstrad receivers would blow several components if they were ever switched off and allowed to get cold.
July/August was a great time for business as people switched their TV/video/sat receiver off when they went on holiday and the power packs blew as soon as they switched back on two weeks later!
Ok guys, thanks a lot for the input. The comments about realistic Hypertherm costs are kind of what I was thinking. I think I'll leave it for someone more into electronics... the last thing I need is another damn plasma project!
I think there is a good service centre for plasma cutters (inc Hypertherm products) in Portsmouth called Rapid Welding, maybe you could contact them to get some info?
