HydroVane HV07RS Cutting out

Hi All,

New to the forum. I have a Hydrovane HV07RS compressor, last year for some time it was leaking oil badly through the motor seal and other gaskets. had to live with it as work was very busy.

We decided to have it repaired and serviced last October but were getting quotes £3K for the repairs, anyways we decided to take on the task ourselves. We ordered all the required parts/gaskets and seals, carried out the work following the workshop service manual , it all went great, cleaned the machine completely of all oil including flushing the radiator and pipes.

Started her up and it ran without any issues, ran up to pressure in no time. A few days after the rebuild it started to cut out after running for a while and after waiting for it to drain all the air it restarted again until the next cutout, this was not an issue before the rebuild service.

We are a small Motorcycle repair shop with a paint spray booth , we have water filters at all feed points, when working it does not produce oil in the air lines. This cutting out seems to happen more and more now so we replaced the Danfus Pressure switch a few days ago, it now lasts a bit longer before failure but does still cutout and needs to be restarted...very annoying whilst painting I must say, plus I noticed a little bit of oil in the air line.

Yesterday we removed all the panels and checked for leaks, no leaks anywhere, removed the oil separator to check for mayonnaise but it was clean with red oil only. The compressor is not used everyday or for real long periods and we do not have a air reservoir tank.

I would really appreciate some help in diagnosing this issue as it is causing major issues in the paint booth.

I'm no compressor expert but have heard that Hydrovanes do like to be run very regularly and don't like to sit there resting for too long. Years ago we used to use Compressorman (Compressorman.co.uk) who were very helpful - and not over expensive when considering the alternative of buying a brand new system.

Hydrovanes like to run continuously for long periods of time.

Condensation not allowed to burn off because they've not run long enough to get hot rusts the inside up.

Can you be more specific when you say “cutout”?

Is it an electrical cutout, as in the motor overload trips?

If so have you measured the current and compared it to what the cutout is reading. What does the motor rating plate suggest the current draw is.

Or is it some other cutout?

Another callout for Compressorman. I bought my first Hydrovane from him at least 20 years ago and it ran well. he was able to source me mechanical bits when other Hydrovanes that I had gave up the will to live. As has been said he is very helpful.

Many thanks for the responses guys. My unit has a continues run and a dunfus controlled toggle switch. if switched to the continues mode it runs and runs with the air sander, when switched to the other mode it randomly cuts out, I have to wait a while before I can switch it on again. I've noticed that it does it more when I am in the booth using the spray gun, my guns only run at 23PSI

I haven't checked the current measurements as electrics and I are not friends.

I will contact Compressorman as suggested and ask if they have engineers in the Edinburgh area, I don't feel I am qualified enough to dabble more and perhaps cause more damage. As mentioned earlier this was not an issue before the rebuild.

Did you get this sorted? If It's a Hydrovane without the electronic controller and push buttons if you open the lid into the electrics you will see a printed board with 2 bulbs, one for motor one for compressor when it stops have a look at that and one of the lights will be out. That will give you a start on if it's a compressor problem or motor

Hi, Thank you for yoru response. I had a very long chat with Compressor Man as suggested earlier. He did mention the timer relay issues but I did not have time to look into this until yesterday.

initially when teh compressor was running neither red lights were on even when it cut out there were no lights, I removed the timer relay with the two red lights on it and cleaned the contacts, reinstalled it and started the compressor, this time both lights came on and stayed on, I let it run for some time without failure, I tested with the paint gun in the booth for a while and the compressor did not fail as before.

I am not convinced that simply replugging the timer after cleaning contacts was the fix. I am currently redesigning the workshop air flow system and introducing a 200ltr reciever tank as suggested by Compressor man. This will be compelted this week so will test more next week.

I am going to request a replacement timer relay from Compressor man in any case.

Does this sound like a logical way to address this issue?
