Hydraulic Ram and Pump

Ive just aquired this ram and pump from a member here. It all works but the ram leaks at the cylinder exit point. Ive cleaned it up and see that it has a gland nut that's teccessed in. I can make a tool to open but ive never played with anything hydraulic. so now I have a few questions.

Will the system be under pressure?
How do I release the pressure and drain oil? There's a nut on the RHS of the pump, looks like a fill drain point but ive not opened it yet.
Where can you get the seals ?
What oil do you fill it back up with?

It's a no name unit with no data plates etc

Looks like an old portapower jobbie used in bodyshops,ours used to have a coupling like used on airlines,as for pressure,doubt it,the pump will work and be filed the same as a trolly jack,most hydraulic places should be able to sort you out some seals.

The two cylinders i have seem to have a spring return inside.
So there might be a spring trying to escape as you undo the end cap.

As above, the hydraulic ram seems to fully retracted so shouldn't be any pressure there. quick look in the phone book should find a firm who specialise in hydraulics for the seals. ditto on the trolley jack oil

Any hydraulic oil should be fine for that system.
Go to a bearing/belt/seal supplier for the seals, they are likely to be on the shelf at any decent place.

Relieving the pressure isn't hard, provided it's not got weight on or pumped to the end of the travel there can't be any pressure. In any event, you want the cylinder all the way in like in the photo to have the least possible amount of oil in it as you can't get it all out and there'll be some mess.
Undo the end cap and remove or open the quick coupler to make it easier to pull the piston out, you need air to be able to get in as you pull.

When it's all reassembled pump it to the end of its stroke and push it all the way in a couple of times to get all the air out.

Another good supply of seals is Allseals in Norwich, I think they do mail order.
