hydraulic press....extra bit??

hi everyone,
ive taken delivery of a press at work and was wondering if any of you might know what on earth the extra bit on the front of the press bed is for??
it looks like a couple of Vs with inbuilt centres, not exactly pressable so wondered what on earth its for.

the worm and wheel lifts the bed up and down via cable

thats what i thought and seems to be what most suppliers blurbs say it has.
do you put a shaft on it with a dti to test the runout then put it in the press?

Top handle is for moving the hydraulic cylinder side to side which is a nice feature as it will let you press near the sides. I might even see if i can replicate that in my press

The worm on the bed will connect to a winch in the bed. So to lift the bed you turn the handle and it winches its self up using 2 wires. Then once you are above the height you want you lower it down onto two pins.

Now as to the bar at the top and the two small V-block on the front. i am not so sure as neither of them looks strong enough to take any load.

Are they simply reference points so you can use them to align the workpiece?

They are for testing the truth (runout) of a shaft that you are straightening on the press - effectively just a pair of 'bench centres' conveniently close to where you are working

I can't see what use they'd be for either pressing or clocking, the vees and the centres are so close to the frame you'd rattle your knuckles off it turning the shaft.

For work with a dti you really want a set of v bearings for the shaft to run on.
Have a look at Keith Fenner on YouTube what this man doesn't know about straightening shafts isn't worth knowing.

He has quite a few shaft straightening bits but searching for them is hard work.

i dont think we`d ever use the straightening fixture so it might just get removed save damaging it until/if ever we need it.
but its nice to know its there if we need it.
you would think on such an expensive piece of kit they would say something in the instruction manual about it lol

weve had more than just the press we even had a new huvema lathe, pedestal drill and a new (im guessing chinese) huge milling machine
