how do you work out what type of oil to use for different applications? there seems to be a few IS0 20 / ISO 30 etc.. surely you cant use the same oil for a bottle jack as you would for a JCB??

Basically the ram on my recovery truck has a slight leak because some previous idiot get weld splatter on the ram-rod. so I need to top it up. it would basically be the same gubbins as you would use on a transit tipper. all the data labels have been painted over in the past.

following on from that other thread I think I may try to fill in the 'crater' on the ram rod with some chemical metal.

Shell used to do a universal farm oil which got used for everything

I think most tippers use ATF ? (automatic transmission fluid.... the red stuff)

same tail lifts / power steering


(I've got it in some manual transit's gearboxes too... was recommended to use it by gearbox place after having a gearbox rebuilt, ford stuff is a bit thick apparently)

I've used Devcon, and Belzona to fill nicks to hydraulic rams with good results

the stuff that is in there currently isn't red so I guess its not ATF.

I will buy a litre off ebay for a fiver as that should last me a year.
