Is it not achieving full height or has it stopped working?
If it's just not achieving full height it's more than likely just vapours that have been lost out the breather over the years.
Brake fluid works but needs changing regularly because it's hygroscopic. Things can go rusty otherwise. One of my old trolley jacks we took to Iceland was topped up with brake fluid, still going strong.
use hydraulic oil it will be fine.
You might be interested to know then, that the brakes on a lot of tractors use ATF instead of brake fluid, however modern tractors with power assisted brakes use the back end oil (UTTO), but always check before hand as some use brake fluid, some ATF and some UTTO.atf and power steering fluid is seal friendly
I've seen a few tractor brake seals that have swollen up and wreaked because someone used the wrong fluid, usually using brake instead of ATF.Brake fluid will eat the jack seals. Avoid!!!
