Hydraulic Car Lift Jammed.

Mornin All, Sorry to jump the introduction bit as Ive just bought a second hand Clarke 100e and hope to pick up a few tips on Mig welding ,only got a bit more pressing problem. I have a hydraulic car lift , it's for 2 wheels simple thing drive on pump up the lift and bingo access to my car. Now pumped it up and let it relax onto the stops ,been up for two days ,and one cylinder has started to leak ,released the pressure valve but it only drops 1/2 '' then stops. Does anyone advise would be useful .

Hi Gordon, Yes they are hinged flaps which drop onto the top of the pistons , I left them in place in case the piston collapsed but it's not even reaching the stop. The other piston works a treat. They can be lowered independently of each other two release valves.

You are contradicting yourself slightly saying you have let it onto stops and then saying it isnt reaching the stops some jacks have a lockout burst safety valve that needs an equalish pressure on both sides of the valve try jacking it up again and releasing SLOWLY but what could be happening is it has run out of oil and has air on one side of the safety valve , jack oil is best but auto fluid will work just as well to get you by the lift is a clarke 100e ? because that shows as a welder ?

i think in the orignal post the said he bought the mig 100 for welding but also bought a lift ramp

Ah yes thanks, I was reading as it was the 100e that had a problem.
Coz was then thinking about the jack problem !! rereading that now slowly I realise my mistake
same thing applies though to the jacks prob.

Also when you say released the pressure valve is that the down valve or the pressure relief valve because that can have the lock out built in it.

if it's leaked a little and dropped slightly, there's probably some kind of anti fall device (little catch) or something to make sure they go down evenly ?

try lifting it up higher and then letting it down, that could disengage anything that locks it for safety

(tho you might need to lift it up a bit then pull/push something before you drop it down)

Thanks for all your replies, Steve from Belper who is local to me very kindly came over and helped me out , in fact he sorted it out for me. The piston retaining threaded ring had worked itself out and hence the leak and as it was beyond the extent of its travel had jammed . So after jacking up the ramp removing said piston cleaning it up and replacing screwing back retaining ring and bolting back into place all was good, apart from a bit of air in the system which blew out and showered me in hydraulic fluid [ very good for the complexion ] all was well. So a BIG thanks to Steve and all that replied.
