There is a school of thought regarding silicon break fluid as it does not absorb water any that gets in there either directly or through moist air will cause more damage than if absorbed into the break fluid.
Have seen MC breaks eaten out with it in

I've always found hydraulic brakes easier to set up, smoother, easier to pull and have more stopping power than cable brakes.

and you're too young to remember rod operated brakes?

If you can't get your piston back to size then make new ones from acetal. It won't absorb water like nylon does.

raleigh strikers had pedal back brakes, I only had the grifter so mine never had one.

Yes it doesn't smash yer shins in if you take your feet off the pedals!

But if you use clips & bounce the wheel you can skid the wheel, don't want the chain to break though quite a time on crutches when that happened

Back-pedal brakes, horrible things, used to be used a lot on the continent. They can keep them too. If you read any of the articles of the old mountain bikers in the States, that's what they used as well.
