HVLP turbine vs LVLP gun and 50 litre comp.

Hi guys, after your thoughts.
My hobby/interest is military vehciles, I own a 110 land rover which I normally paint every year as I change the colour. I also normally paint my friends landies and do about 2-6 per year.
Ive been using a gloss roller and have had good results, but am thinking of getting a compressor and spray gun.
I do all my painting outside, and my nieghbours cars are at least 100 yrds away, so no worries about overspray/noise. The reason i'm thinking of getting a comp is because I can do all the painting in a day.

Ive been looking at these;

The above has good write ups on the net, and is quite cheap, it has a 1.8 needle which can't be changed, I asked the dealer about a smaller needle and there isn't one.

Sorry don't want to be harsh but atomising potentially harmfull chemicals and only worrying about a bit of overspray is rather under estimating the potential hazards.

good job u dont live next door to me i shotblast spray and do what i please and me neighbour and i get on fine as long as u dont get overspray on your car or property just chill we get more sh,,it and polution from all the chemical works 4 miles up the road when the winds in our direction and its foggy

I've never used an Apollo type HVLP, only conventional compressors and sprayguns as do I guess 99% of other people so there might be a clue there!

They do have a use, I have seen painters and decorators using them to spray emulsion on huge internal walls and ceilings but spraying synthetics outside you are onto a loser.

I bought an Earlex similar to this one http://www.earlex.co.uk/pro/hv5500.html to paint out the walls and ceilings after our loft conversion a couple of years ago, since then it has been used to gloss radiators and other DIY tasks. I have used it for painting epoxy primer and 2K on brackets and small panels stripped off my Range Rover, the finish is ok, fine for under bonnet and hidden interior parts. If you have been using a gloss roller to paint the Landies, I expect you would be happy with the finish from a decent Airless. If you can make some sort of shelter it would help keep insects, grit and other airborne bits off the paint as well as reducing the neighbours’ annoyance.
I chose the Earlex because it had a metal gun, paint pot unlike a lot of the cheaper ones, I figured it would cope with solvent better than the plastic ones.

30 years ago I was using a French made HVLP turbine kit for painting gensets (and my vans) but not outdoors. The kit then was made by Volumair, since disappeared I think, but the Apollo units are the very same idea, just a different implementation of it.
The Spraymate you were looking at is the cheapskate version and very limited, if you're really planning on doing 6 Landies and other things per annum, it would be worthwhile looking seriously at the 1200 unit - and you get a choice of needles for a start.
As well as buying the shoulder-slung turbine model, the genset company hired a much larger unit I painted the inside of the factory with. The wonderful thing about that, was the ability to closely control spray and overspray, such that I could rattle along the wall, ease off the trigger a bit and not have to mask off the windows, such is the fine control on a decent unit.

Interesting to note - those who put these units down don't usually know them very well, if at all. They're impressive to use - even if you've never sprayed before, you can pick one of these up and be painting almost right away and not bothering prodnoses next door, never mind two fields away.

I can't offer advice on any of the guns as I don't have any of those, but as far as the hose goes - I see that's 8mm, which is the smallest size for practical use and avoids the rubbishy 6mm ones. That one has the Euro connectors too, which will match up nicely with your compressor kit. Since this is your first one and you don't have anything invested in the narrow connectors, that's a good thing.
