how wud u go about this?

hi people im new here and today i was poking around under the carpet of my xr2 and found this:

so my question is how would u go about fixing these holes?

i'd clean it all back so you can see how far the rust goes. then cut it out. then cut you metal to just fit in side the hole you cut. tack on check your happy with the fit then give it a blast of weld

Whats your plans for the car mate. If your repairing to sell it then patch her up but if its a keeper then i would cut the lot out and replave the floor pans, give inside floor a coat of yellow, the stone chip underneath if you want to the job properly.

Hadrian still do repair panels for the XR2. What year is it??

hi thanx very much for all your comments, its a d reg mk2 xr2 and its a keeper, i am going to do the work properly wat thickness steel wud u use? and also is it a good idea to be using a grinder in the car wud it mess up the rest of the paint work, or waht have u used to cut the rust out?

Grinding and welding in a car will make a mess, strip out ALL the interior you can and cover the rest well. It shouldn't affect the paintwork too much though as the heat is very localised. Be careful with the glass, it's very easy to get weld spatter embedded in it. You would probably want to use 18g (1.2mm) steel for that.

why not just buy a floor pan, i doubt they are much more than £20, cut the old one out weld a new one in job done. just as rs chris say. so much easier.
Friend of mine his 18yr old daughter, has just bought herself a mini which she intends to restore and have as her first car on the road, needs shed loads of welding, front floor pans, bottom of the doors and countless other things welding. Its not so bad as she is an apprentice car mechanic, so i will get every thing stripped down and a bare shell to work on whilst she gives it a full mechanical overhaul. Where possible we will use pre-made panels because it makes life easier, and where bits can be obtained or pre done stuff is to expensive, ill fabricate bits. With her permission ill post much of the work done on the forum, it might help anyone doing a restoration project, and give them a few idea's. Heres the worst of it, i hate working on cars, but told her if it was all clean and easy to work on i would TIG weld it rather than MIG. why did i say that
