As long as the surrounding metal is sound, cut it out and make a piece that can be butt welded into position, Can sometimes be useful to tack a small rod to the patch for holding purposes while tacking the patch,Easily cut off afterwards,
Has that previously had a patch stitched on opposite the hole ? Or is that 2 sections to form the box.
that is going to get much bigger how far does that elongated hole propagate from the round one.
That is going to grow and as it's a part of a suspension mount I should consider replacing it as a section not a patch.
I don't really do car welding now but if I still did then that's the only way I should even look at taking it on. Something goes wrong on a bend and it could have very serious consequences
You'll be going a very long way to find sound metal on that, expect to hack out the entire lump if you want to make a lasting repair (i.e better than a bodge to get through a test).
The problem with overlapping is that it gives a place for water to collect, so it's a short term bodge.
The mount is in two parts. That's the seam you see going up the middle. Yes, will clean back with wire brush/grinder and see if there is any good metal. Will investigate more. You can't mess with safety and do need to do these things right!
Hi and welcome to the forum.
The side is all cracked and bowed out from pressure, the whole piece would be better removed and a new
one fabricated and welded into place.
Quite a bit of work, may be do a good check to ensue there is not more of the same elsewhere.
Did better than that... Got rid of the motor. Just way too much work for a novice like me. Prefer to practise on something not so critical...know your limits
