I’ve been reading up on how wire rope is manufactured and wanted to share a brief overview of the general process for discussion.
As far as I understand, manufacturing typically begins with drawing high-carbon steel wire down to precise diameters. These individual wires are then twisted together to form strands, and multiple strands are laid around a core (either fiber or steel) to create the final rope construction.
After stranding and closing, the rope usually goes through lubrication, preforming, and various inspection steps such as dimensional checks and tensile testing. The exact process can vary depending on rope construction, application, and performance requirements.
What I find interesting is how small variations in wire quality, lay direction, or lubrication can have a noticeable impact on flexibility, fatigue resistance, and overall service life.
I’m still learning about this topic, so if anyone here has hands-on experience with wire rope manufacturing or inspection, I’d appreciate any insights or corrections.
