How to weld different thickness's

How do you go about welding say a 2.5mm sheet to a 4.5mm for a bracket etc. ? Because I'm new with little understanding I can't get my head round it, if the power is just right for the 2.5mm surely the weld pool won't penetrate the 4.5mm and if it's ok for the 4.5mm would it just melt the 2.5mm ?????????

Simply set it in between Slightly on the higher end if anything. When you run the weld, simply aim towards the thicker bit slightly more.
