How to weld a broken Carver Clamp ?

Hi

What's the best way to weld a broken Carver Clamp ? Mig or Arc ? and if arc which rods ?

and before you all ask, yes I was being an animal with it, I was using it to fasten a lifting strap to a cast table top (that must weigh 1/2 a ton) so I could drag it with my 4x4, it was rather more stuck in the ground than I was expecting

They are cast steel so you could stick weld it, I would use low hydrogen rods, or if you have a powerful enough mig then use that.
Vee it out before you start.
Then relegate it to light duties, the weld will always be a weak point.

I did mine with tig, and stainless wire. Bit of an unknown at the time. They weld really nicely, good quality casting.

Prepped it right back to a v both sides.

Even painted it with a fresh coat of orange.
Probably use it more than the others now. Something psychological abou always picking up the shineyest one!
I havnt been careful with it and its still together, although i don't use it for clamping things up high or supporting heavy loads now, just incase.

I'd prefer to mig it as I have a lot more experience with mig than stick, I've done years of tig in the past aswell but I don't have access to a tig set at the moment (anyone got a tig set in North Wales they don't want? I don't mind scratch-start but must be single phase), I really should practice my stick more, but not on this item I want it strong.

Should just about manage it , I only said that because a lot of members here are using hobby migs, so would most likely struggle

i have put a new pad on the end of one of my carvers after an unfortunate accident with a lamp..........

as tig paul said, i just used a 7018 to put a pice of Mild plate in place of the clamping 'pad'.

that was a few years ago and its still holding strong.
