Another thought that popped into my head, and I don't mean to patronise but....
Always start off with the taper tap, then the middle (if the set includes one) then the plug. Its the correct way to do it, and will reduce the chance of breaking the taps.
If you are tapping blind holes, remove the tap every few turns, and clear the swarf from the bottom of the hole. It is really difficult to clear them if the tap compacts the swarf into the bottom of the hole. (the voice of experience again)
