Hi folks,
What's the best way to strengthen box section when used as a gate post.
I've a job coming up for a pair of 6ft wide gates (each lead is 6ft, 12ft total) and want to use big, either 100mm or 120mm box as the posts, partly for the look of the size and partly because I have it in the workshop, both are 5mm or so wall thickness. However, these are going to be pretty heavy gates, 50x12 frame, 20mm round bar horizontals like an estate rail look with an emblem in the centre. What I don't want to happen is the box section give at the hinge point as there's too much weight on it, so I'd like to strengthen the post, is there a standard way of adding in an internal gusset?
I suppose the other option is to use some 120mm UC and add side plates so the Web is the strengthening bit for the hinges.
Cheers, Dan
