How to repair these holes

Hello

My car has just failed its MOT due to holes on rear wheel arch.

Would just like some advice as to how this can repaired. Does it need a plate? Or is there another way?

Im just looking for the cheapest way and can this be done by a novice and what will I need.

Rover or Honda? Picky mot man. I've done (bodged) this job. I simply snipped the section off and used it as a template to make a new bit using nothing but a vice and a hammer, I "capped" the bottom of the peice I made by welding a plate on it before attaching it to the car.

I appreciate on one side you done seem to have much left to make a template from with some trial and error you will get there. Cut a good 15m or so higher than the visible rust doe that you both avoid crappy metal and have something to use as a template.

You will likely have a small hole in the sill too. You will need to take the side skirt off anyway.

Thank you for that, it is a Honda. The car is 16 years old so so he is being a bit picky considering it only failed on that and a split gaitor. Apparantly its because its within 30cm of seat belt anchor, which is a stupid rule as they are effectively two seperate parts.

I've read that before the line "Any structure or panelling which is supportive to either the component mounting or its load bearing member within 30cm of the mounting location. eg. In the examination of a seat belt mounting on an inner sill, consideration must be given to the outer sill, door pillar, floor panel, wheel arch or any other supportive structure within 30cm of the component mounting point".

I interpret that to mean that this shouldn't be an MOT failure because it is not supportive to the mounting or load bearing member, then in the second part the key word is "consideration" not fail. So unless he considers this hole is likely to cause failure of the mounting then he has the grounds to pass it despite being within 30cms.

trouble is it's also within 30cm of the rear suspension mounting looking at it that way
same set up on the rover

think of a football a 30cm circle anything within the circle is a fail
you could argue the point with the tester but they have altered a lot of stuff this year like rubber boots split used to be advise now a fail same on cv joints

I understand what you mean. Its just frustrating that something so small is classed as "excessive" corrosion due to flawed MOT system. It makes me wonder what term they use to describe a Fiesta or any other Ford.

its just the gov way of trying to get rid of all the old gas guzzling old cars, they want everyone in a 1.0 mahosive turbo super mini job to make the statistics look good. Give me a proper car every time, nothing wrong with a whacking great turbo but at least stick it on a good sized motor, not a silly 1.2 or something. I understand why but I apy my road tax I want to drive my old car.

I bet more people have been run over by a stupid electric car they couldn't hear then have been hurt by a wheel arch failing and causing a failure in the seat belt anchor. Just a thought.
