How to preserve cardboard box?

But I have acquired a cardboard box, with a interesting tool in it.

But in it's life the box has got wet and dried out and is showing it's age.



I was wondering if any one knows a simple but effective way of persevering the box.

Just keep going on at it until it gives in? As to preserving the box, shellac, wax etc., if you must. I wouldn't bother though, as it has survived admirably well all this time with no protection.

Get the box bone dry and gag it in clingfilm

Seal it inside a tupperware box.

Strengthen it from the inside with thin card, PVA glue brushed on the outside

Just a thought, if sealing it up so it can no longer breathe and whatever is in it is ferrous it may be worth adding some silica crystals.

It looks quite small so another option would be a custom wooden box, a quick search found these various sizes at quite reasonable prices.

Yeah give it to my missus and tell her its got a 'spare key' in it - no rot or decay would dare go near it!

This hand drill box was saturated inside and out with a spray can of clear lacquer, more years ago than I care to remember. It is more brittle now, so doesn't get piled into the van with a load of tools on top, but has preserved its shape pretty well.

Put it in a cardboard box. Things always keep well in them, so long as you don't get them wet.

I have used silicon spray like the stuff you get for waterproofing suede, I think it was made for shoes by 3M/scotchguard
