How to paint pin-striping - order of application?

Afternoon All,

Have decided to have a go at painting my own petrol tank/bike bits in the 70' livery Yamaha yellow.

this is going to be my first attempt at using a "proper" gun having been a rattle can jockey for years.

Anyway, question is what order to lay down the colours???

I'm thinking white, then mask off for the yellow, then mask off for the pinstriped black boxes and thin line??

Might be easier to apply the yellow colour only then apply a RD decal set and lacquer over the lot.

I'd go with decals to be honest. If you get it even slightly wrong it will look rubbish and then you will need to do it all again but with decals.

its not an RD tank, just the design I'll be doing is similar. The stripe will be running down the center of the tank....................

Just found these online, will do some more research if I can get them the size I want?? Maybe even get custom set made, good call on the decals....

My Yamaha fazer was done exactly like that from factory. And so is my Triumph.

cheers, just fired off a few emails earlier to get some prices/availability. want them a specific width, so see what turns up...................

If you google Yamaha speed block decals or stickers you should get lots of hits.

Nip into your local sign company, they will be able to make you a set to your sizes

if you intend to lacquer over the decals make sure what ever you use is solvent safe and will take the lacquer without it peeling later

That wouldn't be hard to paint.
Without putting much thought into it:
Yellow and clear.
flat the clear
white
black
clear the entire thing

or white ground.
mask the white outline.
yellow
mask the yellow.
black
clear

I did a few push bike frames in October.Here's one of the transfers, it all masked; it's around 33mm high.
I can see all the flaws in it. I used to hand cut all the masking, But I got a cheap Chinese vinyl cutter to do the masking for the push bike frames; that's how come I can mask 2mm high letters;-) I do have pics of a GSX tank while it was painted, probably step by step.

He prints stuff for at least one english bike maker and his stuff get cleared over, I know clearing over vinyl from the local sign shop didn't always turn out ok.

thanks for the heads up, i'll get the paint and clearcoat, then confirm compatibility with the decal supplier....
