how to fix this rust on car?

noticed this when washing my car the other day a group of small rust bubbles around the lower sill, arch area. not sure whats caused it, possibly a stone chip and water has got in? a shame as its the only bit of rust on the car.

whats the best way to go about fixing this problem? can it just be ground back to bare metal or is it best to cut this section out and weld in new? if I just need to clean the metal is there anything I can apply to prevent the rust from returning?

will be painted with just a spray can, shouldn't look to bad as since its down low its not really an area you will focus on

I'd blast that with one of the small spot blast guns, treat with zinc etch primer, fill the pitting, then get a can of spray paint matched to top coat it.

You might just be lucky and have caught it before the rust perforated the panel.

Treat the rear of the repair as well if possible.

yeah that aint no stone chips...its rotted from the other side

so cut it out and weld in new metal....or if its a temp bodge up clean it up both sides and fibre glass filler it

I would flap disc it so you can see how bad it really is. If you like the car or it's worth a lot then it may be worth cutting the rust out and welding a patch in, providing you can do a good, neat job.


Bilt Hamber do some good rust removers and rust encapsulator. Deox C is really good, but no good for tiny bits like this. You make it up from a powder and leave the rusty item to soak. Deox Gel is the same but painted on, covered with cling film, then later washed off. It is supposed to get the rust out of the pitted bits that a flap disc can't remove. It's quite good but not as good as the powder. Sand/soda blasting would get the most rust out, then something like BH Hydrate 80, then primer.

This is the kind of 'little' job that can end up being a lot of work.

As others have said it's come from the other side and there are already holes in the panel. When you start poking and prodding it's going to get bigger.

It looks fairly flat and hopefully it doesn't extend as far as the arch itself so should be a relatively easy fix welding some new metal in there.
