How to empty a fire extinguisher?

Hello all.
I am building a banger racing car and need a small fuel tank. I'm thinking an old fire extinguisher may do the job, I'll pick one up from the tip next time I'm there, but how do I get it to a state I can start chopping it up? Also any suggestions on how to make a lid for it?
Alternatively does anyone have a different easier suggestion? It needs to have a fuel feed and return and a breather. The filler must seal the tank and it can't be more than three gallons.

Sounds like you need a standard soda ash . gas type water or foam fire extinguisher with a big screw on cap .. there would already be the outlet and it would be a cinch to tap in two more holes for the return and breather.
I think they are three gallons but you could fill the tank with scrap ally to reduce the actual volume to 3 gall if the actual capacity exceeds it.

Last time I used one for a fuel tank the top screwed off. That was in 1995 mind!
You can buy purpose made alloy tanks on eBay but they cost £40 upwards. A metal jerry can is another solution that I have used in the past.

It's not a big track mate, only push and spin. It's fine as long as it has a breather.

get a aluminium co2 extinguisher the top screws out and would be stronger then the thin steel ones in a bump

have used old diving tanks in past you can get them cheap enough.

Standard size for (non CO2) extinguishers is 9 litres so well inside 3 gallon limit. If it's "stored pressure" type it should have a gauge and schrader type valve to de-pressurise, otherwise it will be a "cartridge" type, unscrew the top and pull out, remove gas cartridge and dispose of sensibly.
