How to dismantle a vice?

A guy in work asked me to put a new jaw on a vice he found in a skip. I need to take the vice apart to drill out the old jaw retaining screws. Problem is it won't screw out.
I've screwed the handle open as far as I can but something seems to be holding onto the nut.
Has anyone got any ideas?

Look at the end of the screw away from the handle. There may be a nut or a washer/collar retained by a split pin

I'll have another look, but I think the screw is almost off the nut l. It's just hanging on by about 1 thread.

Also look for a small grubscrew going in at 90 deg. to the lead screw at the handle end. Remove this and the lead screw will screw out as ^^

Ok thanks chaps, will try pulling the pin out. Will have to do it tomorrow as won't be back to the yard till late tonight.

You'll most likely have to drift it out. Check to see if it's a taper pin, if so it will only come out one way.

On the Record I took apart recently there was a pin at the back of the base holding the nut into its dovetail, this needs to be removed. Then a pin that holds a retaining bush on the screw needed to be removed. The screw was then screwed out and removed allowing the nut to slide out the back which in turn allowing the moving jaw to slide out.

Good job lads! Punched the little tapered pin out and jobs a goodun. When I reassemble it should I use oil or grease on the thread?

My two 6" Record vices have a small oil hole above the screw for lubrication, Gease would be more likely to hang onto any blown about metal particles or swarf etc.

I use oil on mine. I save the left overs from oil changes and use that.

Hi, When I worked for the bus company the guys on the rota (service) pit used to mix EP90 and grease in equal parts up into a sort of slurry in a pot. Any fork end and clevis pin on the brake and handbrake linkage or any other moving parts underneath had this brushed on. We never had any problems with worn or seized parts because the grease protected and held the oil in place.

If you look at the first pic above, the tab on the nut seems to be a lot smaller than the hole in the casting. Is this normal? I was thinking I could weld a bit of bar either side of the tab to take out the worst of the play. What do you think?

I used the same mix on my motorcycle wheels, painted the rims & spokes with it before winter, in a couple of weeks they turn black, but come spring a good wash with degreaser and they're nice and sparkly with no rust.

Hi, Yes, that's true to an extent. With grease if it's pushed away by action of the nut on the screw thread it stays there and doesn't readily flow back in. Oil will flow back in but it can equally flow away as well if there's nothing to stop it. Horses for courses.
