Just out of interest how much arc welding is still done in industry ?
why? Just wondering - genuine questionRefrigeration pipework is rooted with tig and mma for the cap runs.
Didn't know this about galvanised stock. What rods do you have to use? It’s the only process that can work galvanise successfully, with out a massive clean up. A lot of pipe still welded with it outside the pharmaceutical industry where tig has took over. Structural steel and plate work is mainly stick on site to. Stick is still king in terms of its versitility. Very reliable provided the man is up to it. 3 problems either the man the welder or the rod.

true ,,, the last high pressure steam job I was on needed plumbing in on site , and we had to fly a welder in from Scotland to get the job finished ,,, he was stick welding using a bent rod and a mirror in the end to get rid up , I couldnt put mastic on as tidy as he could weld.Less and less in building services pipework. Even fairly small jobs now get done in fab shops using TIG root runs then all MIG. A lot is to do with the need to minimise chemical cleaning etc after installation. If you look at a system that has been arc welded being cleaned, there is a lot of debris in the strainers during the flushing process. Also, the shortage of welders prepared to work in site conditions and the minimising of hot works on site has sped the road to the fab shop. Shame really.
for cleanliness , no slag ,less grinding dust , no spatter
it saves damage to valves and instruments , and spatter can detatch even after pigging /flushing
Well, they stick weld gas pipelines.I was told that it was to ensure a gas tight seal.
