I've got an inverter unit at the minute and have used upto 110 amps with no problems.
I'm looking at a new welder and don't know if i should go for a big old machine, cheap and easy to repair, or spend the extra on a new inverter type welder.
Like the guys have said, depends on whats downstream. I often have to run the MIG from a 13amp, that seems ok at 180, but it certainly doesnt feel as gutsy. The inverter based machines are far more efficient, you should quite happily be able to get 220 amps from a dedicated simgle phase supply. Just make sure everything else is up to it or you could have some (major) problems
I have a 210amp mig. At its highest setting (but with .8mm wire not 1mm) its at about 195-200amps. That worked fine plugged into a dedicated supply using 16amp (should realy be 32amps) plugs.
