how long do codings last?

A freind of mine past his welding codings years ago (about 15ya). since then he has been running his own scooter repair firm and has had no need for them. Are they still good or would he have to resit them? As I need the use of a coded welder for a couple of days a month (insurance reasons) and he said he would do it if they were still valid.

Not a hope. Anyway, which codings do you need a welder to have? It's not like a driving test. Well actually it is a bit - so, do you need, like, a car driver, a bus driver, an HGV1,2,3, or 4 driver, a tank driver, a telehandler driver, a crane driver, a cyclist etc etc. Get my drift? And codings need to be renewed/ signed off on a regular basis.

Ive have a contract with a major engine company in there service department blasting engine components. Currently they are having to send the chassis frames to the west midlands for blasting, NDTing and welding of any stress fractures. I can have this job as well if I can get them welded up but it has to be fully coded (they are deisel electric units off trains). The blasting and NDTing I already do but it doesnt justify employing a full time welder.

Sean, once you've identified the codings required (based on material, thickness, position etc), although it may be a straightforward mild steel 5g kind of code, you may be best off finding a coded local mobile plant repair/welding co, to do the work for you. We have a local engineering firm here with coded welders who will come in and do an hour or two as required, and not charge an arm and a leg.
Certainly worth pricing it up.
