On one of the recent cold mornings, I started up my car (VW Golf) and left it running, but locked it with the spare key.

While that was running, I also opened up and started my Van (VW Caddy).

Now, somehow the remote key for my car also zaps open my van and the key for my van also zaps open the car.

I have somehow, syncronised both key fobs to the car and van! How the hell did that happen!?!

They wont actually start each other, but they will both remotely open up the locks.

You might have stumbled onto the procedure to re-program the key fob. A similar procedure is described here but the guy says he couldn't get it to work. Obviously he doesn't have your touch.

Might be worth erasing and re-programming the fob on one of the cars.

They wont start the other vehicle because the buttons to lock the car are radio frequencys and ONLY operate the locks The imobilisor part of the key is a tiny chip embedded in the key Or as in my Galaxy (also a VW Sharan) a little wdge shaped insert in the key holder, called a transponder. there is a an electronic coil around the ignition key barrel that "talks" to the transponder and the fuel computer in the car. If the transponder isn't the right one (ie matched) the the computer in the car wont let it start. It thinks your a chav with a big screwdriver and a scafold tube.

On my transit i had to have a key made £40 mobile cutter,he told me any ford key would lock my doors only the correct key would open it ....then tryed to copy the transponder chip.which didn't work so he dug the chip out of the old key and fitted that instead new fangled 10 year old rubbish

Yes I am reliably informed that any Ford Key will lock any Ford car, as long as they are both the round shaft keys with the sticky out bits on (technical term used) lol...

Opening old style ford locks is easy. I'll keep quiet though, don't want everyone to know these thins.

Getting into old PSA's is also easy if you know the way. I can get into my Saxo inside 15seconds with a metal ruler. About the same time for a 205 with a screwdriver...

Malcolms idea is probably viable, somehow activating the reprogramming sequence while operating fobs with another key in the lock...

If either are under warranty, might be worth asking your dealer if a free reprogramme is viable, just perhaps not mention that youve been operating with spare keys etc...

I would have thought also somehow you reprogrammed it....

I used to regally wipe the fobs with the GPS systems used on kit, the same data transfer would also destroy Sims on mobile phones, and could effect guidance back to the machine....

strange things can happen with those fobs, tho I bet the mfrs will never admit it....

Any old Ford ( I think they changed the procedure about 1999) that had the red coloured ' master ' key can reprogram any other Ford key imobiliser chip of the same era , it still wont start your car unless the shaft has been cut to fit the steering lock/ignition switch but at least if you lose a key you dont have to pay the stupid prices they charge now for a new remote fob and programming . The instructions how to do it are in the handbook supplied with the car .

to program a transit transponder key you must have the fully red master key
insert the master key swith on ignition remove and insert new key straight away turn on ignition job done.
can only be done with red master key
