hi guys i have started to teach myself tig after 15 years pushing a mig,i can put a weld down but i cant seem to get that fish scale overlap its neat but not like the scale effect ,i have only tried welding mild steel but need to know the tips like torch movement can anyone give me some guidence?

Can you post some pics?? It speaks a thousand words and allows people to give a lot better specific advice where your going wrong.
In short its a few main things based on the assumption the plant is set up correctly. Heat control, co ordination and rhythm. It does take a while to get all 3 working together. Practice and more practice is the key. Some pics would be a great benefit.

sorry mate but camera on the blink but its like the scale affect only much tighter , looks like when you go over a deep root with a mig sorry for no pics as you say they can tell you a lot more than words can.thanks though i will try to get some on my phone

well, this is what i do. get the right settings on the welder. start the arc up. keep it there and count til you get the puddle started, maybe takes a couple of seconds, then move the arc across a few mm till the puddle is visibleagain then move again. easier to see on stainless.
thats with no filler though. with filler let the puddle form, dab in some rod pull out the rod but keep it within the gas shield then move the arc then repeat. its easier to show whilst welding. hard to explain. you wont get big scales with m/s like you will with ally as ally and stainless both flow really well. well thats my opinion.
you would be better off having a scout through youtube at some tigging vids.

thanks for that scotty i will check out you tube i have been practisin and seem to have grasped the basics i am getting the overlap now and the problem i had was making the steel run so i will see if i can grab me some ally to mess around with but will watch the vids on you tube first cheers mate

you got ac/dc tig then? you cant really weld ally with a dc tig ~(well you can but its not as good as ac) try it with some stainless mate

Too much heat
One question on this same subject, ive been tigging stainless for a couple of months and learnt that to start a butt weld easily you need a high current to get the two molten blobs to join across the gap but then this setting is a little too high to continue the weld. What would you suggest?

use the pulse settings if you have them if not use a footpedal. failing both of those then reduce the amps slightly and on the start up let the puddle form, may take a second or two longer, then add the filler
