How do I test this

Old man wired this Schneider starter up that I found in the skip. It had a 110v lead on it.

he has tried his 240v linisher on it and it worked then let the blue smoke out.

how do I test what is broken and can I wire this up to a small three phase drill.

The unit is a Schneider LE1D09U7.
The contractor is an LC1D09 and the overload is LRD10.

If I can test it and it still works I’ll need help wiring it haha.

There will be a coil to pull the contactor in and that will be rated at 110v if it it had a 110 plug on it. Looking at the schematic its connections are A1/A2.

I've bought new coils in the past and they're easy to swap.

If it let blue smoke out it's probably the coil in the contactor (upper part), you might be able to get a replacement in the correct voltage, 240v if there's a neutral (so coil's across one of the lives and neutral) or 415 if it's on 3P + E (across two lives) - the upper section with the contact set is usually clipped onto the base withthe coil in it. Might be easier/cheaper to replace the contactor with one off EvilBay with the right coil in it?

For a decent brand like Schneider its probably cheaper to buy a complete unbranded unit from screwfix than to buy the coil like hopefulldave says..

have a look at the coil, normally it's marked on it the input voltage, probably 110, in which case you need to swap it for a 240v one, easy enough to do, but as above OEM coils for schneider aren't cheap, don't know if you can get aftermarket ones that'll fit?

Good point about fitting an aftermarket one, might be a good option.
I know the coil for the one (telemequinque?) I had was double the price of the whole thing from screwfix.

Not a lot you can do to test it. You could put a multimeter across the coil wires and see if there is any resistance open circuit would suggest its completely burnt out but you might well get a reading if it's only partially burnt.

Might be worth pushing the button in and checking continuity between L1 in and L1 out etc before buying just a coil for it

The whole thing I bought was about £20 from screwfix.
If you are using it multiple times a day it might be better to fix the decent one?

This will probably go in the spares bin as it’s dearer to fix than buy a whole new unit with the correct coil I need.

its the resellers that make the money on them the parts are peanuts they charge 60 quid for a poxy nightstore thermostat that can be made for 10 quid

im finding this on a lot of stuff get stuff that you would think ok that should be worth it look at the new price £99.99 petrol strimmer

missing air filter cover and needs fuel cap total cost inc posting near £35 better off buying a working one for £35 so scrap the unit and remove the plug pull cord switches and its gone for scrap

I’ve pulled the starter apart and it’s got a 110V coil. So I’ll take a punt on a new coil. Will have to be 415v as there’s no neutral on this old drill

I think I have a starter you can have mate. Let me go out and see what it is.

Most stuff seems to be disposable these days when I started in the 70's you could buy refurb kits with replacement springs, fixed and moving contacts etc. to overhaul contactors.
