How do I make this hook?

I need to copy this hook (t'other one snapped). Considered just wacking a threaded bar into shape but seeing as these hooks hold my petrol tank I thought I'd have a re-think. Making the flared end has got me stumped -

Any ideas spring to mind?

Heat a piece of rod, red heat, and whack it with a BFH. Reheat and form it around a piece of rod of the correct diameter.

Yea I was begining to think heat would be the answer - Don't s'pose the gas hob would get it hot enough so I'll need to have a rumage around first.

I've made quite a few of those, some M8 and some M10, just made a hook from 16 x 3 or 20 x 3 flat which is nice and easy to form, (bend it first then cut it to size) , and then its welded to a piece of studding,

Hello Spot,

consider using high tensile threaded bar or go up in size, the ordinary stuff is very low tensile. Personally I would heat and form, my forging skill is better than my welding skill.

If you can get it red hot somehow then grind a few inches of thread off the end of a bit of studding, heat, jump it up to increase the thickness then forge it back out into the shape you want and roll it over.
Should be able to do it in 3 heats.

If you can find a known grade of studding you could heat treat it after otherwise just heat to dull read for a couple of mins and allow to cool slowly.

Or if you could find a bit of thick wall tube about the right size you could cut a length from it, slit it, partially flatten it and weld it onto a bit of studding

No but whenever anybody sees a man with a mobile forge and an anvil in the back of a van they start asking you do do all sorts of jobs with it..

That is such a cool statement, I am still grinning at the thought of it as to the OP, I would go the welded method if you can't heat a bar hot enough to forge the end.

@Paul. I think that'll be more the way I will it try first seeing as I don't have any 'fire'. Thanks @piman & @hotponyshoes - will give some thought to what grade of rod I buy.

If you put up some accurate sizes and it's a common size of studding I can have a go at knocking you one up if you like..

thats no good its size and tensile strength and tolerances are critical christ its only a bracket for a petrol tank there normaly only held on some vehicles with a thin metal strap seen them on wagons and they hold about 40 gallons

Don’t quench it. Let it cool naturally otherwise it will end up being brittle
