how can i tell if i have argon

hi i bought a bottle of argon from a guy ,,is there any way i can make sure its argon or could it be filled with another type of gas it says argon on the bottle ??

If it says argon odds are its argon, AFAIK they all use different fill nozzles


But then again someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly suppose you could test by using it to TIG weld and seeing what happens to the tungsten

Try welding with it, I assume tig? You'll soon know if its not

If its a all blue or a all green bottle chances are its Argon

i was going to use it for mig ,,its a blue bottle says argon on it but not sure if some con men could stick anything in ?

Will give less penetration but no spatter IIRC


I tend to just use pure CO2 as its only £8 a bottle

Only use 100% Ar on mig for welding Aluminium. All other materials require a Ar/Co2 gas mix with the % of Co2 varying dependant on the material

CO2 uses a different regulator.

I use the same regulator for Argon, Argon/CO2 mix and CO2, some pub gas bottles use a flat faced connector with a Nylon washer as a seal. You would need either an adaptor or a different regulator if you end up with one of those bottles.
