How are R clips measured?

Looking for some R clips to fit some 34mm tube.
The straight part of the clip will be fitted through the diameter of the tube so what size clip would I need?

I've always wondered if there's a method for working out the correct size too, I use the unscientific "it looks right" method at the moment

The local agri supplier to me sells them by the diameter of the shaft that they fit.
