Its been on intermittently- the ex criminal chap who was on probation won the job, but since then he seems to have moved to SoCal rivals Barry's Speed shop.

It might have been before- hard to work out the dates these programs were filmed, but then why if he already had a job at Barrys speed shop would he go for this competition and take a chance on not having any job at all.
Barrys seems to do pretty good work, too, although in the modern modified Hot rod style. Like Boyd Coddington (are they still going since he died??)

If you look on the boyd coddington website you can read what happened. Jo (Boyd's Wife) tried to keep things going, Duane demanded more pay and was sacked. She made Dan the workshop manager, but they closed down quite recently. Dan is apparently running his own hot rod shop with select members of the team from Boyds.
I rather enjoy watching American hotrod even just to see tha appalling man management! Also found wrecks to riches USA good fun. I like the idea of modern running gear in a classic shape, which both Boyd and Barry do. I have recently bought an old BMW Baur convertible, and am wondering what Boyd would have done with it!
Shame the UK based hotrod type programmes are so ****e.

I think boyd was great but i think Duane let the company down. Just look how many people left boyd coddington hot rods. Nearly every episode some one left! I did enjoy watching the program though when roy was there.
I hope Hot rod apprentice makes a repeat of the whole series i just love jimmy shines hot rods and bikes!

The barry white stuff you are talking about (where they build a car for the show against jimmy shine) is several years old (the wrecks to riches usa stuff is much newer). The ex con guy has also been seen on overhaulin'. The orignal program was done in his old shop, the wrecks to riches was done in his current shop in Covina.
Hot Rod Apprentice is on at least its third re-run already. I don't remember who wins but dave (littleman) is now back home in Ohio and has opened his own shop.
You have to remember that American Hot Rod was defined by the shouting and tantrums etc, the general public wouldn't bother to watch otherwise. When I went to Boyds in January this year (Boyd was in hospital by then but it wasn't really considered life threatening at that time) - we got to wander around the shop a bit, we chatted to Dan and asked all the usual stuff he must hear 100 times a day (do you want us to shout at you? why isnt this one done yet etc etc). He just joked along - thats all it was in the shop, a continual joke.

Yeah ive seen the wrecks to riches usa still doesnt really take my fancy. They seem to me that they just do it for the money.
Yes american hot rod was defined around the shouting etc but for some reason they seem to have loads of people leave! like orange county choppers (American chopper) there became well known for there father son arguments but like paul sr said where not all about business.

Yes, I particularly liked his own pickup that was just bare steel- no paint at all.
The only thing I enjoyed more than seeing Roy work on American Hot rod was seeing the company that build the alumnatub body for boyd- French chap and his two sons "marcels", they had a drawing from Boyds designer and built a whole body of the car from sheet aluminium, beating folding and wheeling it all by hand. I have done some double curvature fabrication on the English wheel and I have to say marcels guys are absolute coachbuilding masters.

Marcel Deley was born in Belgium, trained as a coachbuilder. He moved to California in the early 60s, at that time there was no real call for coachbuilders, so he worked in accident repair shops, every so often he would need to fabricate a panel, he became known for knocking up panels there were not available for people who were restoring cars - thats how he started out. Marc and Luc his sons joined the business and learnt from their dad - Luc told me "this was my saturday job, I just kinda forgot to go get a real job".
They are great people, very friendly, showed us everything and answered all the questions. We turned up early afternoon, about 20 minutes later some other people turned up, Marcel looked at the clock "ah, we go home after this, have some beer" ! The guy is 79 and keeps up with Marc and Luc! He does take a few holidays to Hawaii every year though. It became quite apparent that most things were followed by "having some beer".
If you are ever in the LA area its worth the drive to Covina to meet them.
In my pictures you can see a '36 being built, story is the owner had an original car, he took it Marcels for some work (roof chop, probably a bit of rust repair etc). Marcel suggested building a new body rather than using the original, Chip Foose was called in, did a design, the guy loved it and commisioned Marcels to build it. Luc was building thecar purely from the life size diagram you see behind the car - no measurements, no fancy 3D CAD models, just a keen eye and years of experience. They reckoned it had 400 or so hours in to get that far and had maybe another couple of weeks to finish the fenders/hood/engine cover sides. At $80 an hour I'll leave you to do the maths ! Remember thats just for the body, the chassis was done by a hot rod shop, as the final metalwork and bodywork would be. Its probably a $150k car once done.
Not too fussed on Shine, for all the hype I don't see anything original in what he does (granted he does do it very very well though).

Is Barry's speed shop the one on Recks to Riches USA? From some of the episodes ive seen, ive been pretty unimpressed with their working practises. Maybe its just the TV shows as they seem to get people in to work for free most of the time?
