Horses hooves

I need to make some window bars, for a stable. The key point is to get the spacings right. Obviously i dont want a horse hoof to get stuck between the bars.

They will be 1200 x 900.
I was thinking about going for 16mm round, at 100mm centres...so gaps of 84mm...?

I guess as there will be people in the stable you will need to follow the regs for guards for humans as well.

Obviously narrower than a hoof but if a horse kicked out and bent them it could get it's hoof stuck between the bars. Why not go for 200 centres so that a hoof will definately pass between?

From my vague recollection of horses hooves.. i'd be tempted to keep the gaps quite tight, maybe a 75 gap, so 91 ish centres. Seem to remember horses hooves are quite small.
Surely the client should be specifying that anyway?

Sounds like they have long legs anyway to get up to kick at the windows?

Just spoke to "the horses mouth" (Mrs Robo) who's had horses for 20+ years who recommended horizontal rather than vertical bars, or they use weldmesh instead of bars at present stable.
Also measured a (horse) shoe she's got - 130mm at widest point.

I would guess you want the hoof to hit at least 3 bars to spread the impact.

the last 2 stables i worked in both had windows .they have flat felt roofs

All the stables at the wifes yard have windows about 1800mm from floor

haha fair enough, the farm i used to go to had loads of stables but none had windows, they just had corrugated roofs with clear bits in for light.

Seems a bit pointless having a window in them and barring them up, I thought the top doors were normally just left open for the horse.

me last job was move the outdoor weatherproof switches futher away from the doors . the horses were sticking there heads round and turning them on and off

I got fed up replacing the switches so put metal guards on to stop the horses chewing them!

my horse is quilty of that at the min she is a sod for it too i think she hates the dark.
all i can say on the gaps is make it tight a friends horse died last year due to kicking at the bars between the stables and the gap was just right that the back hoof went throu and got stuck he went down breaking his leg and ruptering a artery wich resulted in his death. i never saw it but aparently it was a mess.

Sounds like a grid would be better.

I will be in the yard tomorrow (I also worked with horses for my sins) and they have some commercially made vertical bar guards so they should be regarded as a good point of reference to go by.
I will measure them up and post the results tomorrow pm.

The guards on the stables down the yard are verticle 10mm solid ms at 100mm centres.
