If you keep an eye out for building works in your area that have scaffolders working on them it's often easy to cadge a length or two of shorter bits from a skip. I did this about 2 years ago and got a pair of 2 metre lengths that have served as gateposts (set in Postcrete) ever since with no discernible corrosion.
I'm not a regular skip diver, but earlier this year I rescued dozens of lengths of sound wood, a solid wood internal door and a glass shower door (with ally frame) from one. Much of the wood has gone into the construction of my new workshop, shelving, lean-to lawn mower box and even a small seating area with clear roof, lights and front curtain to keep the rain out when not in use. Obviously I got permission from the workers first.
